Extreme Heat Warning in Effect for Decorah; Cooling Center Open at Library

DECORAH — An extreme heat warning remains in effect for Decorah and the surrounding Winneshiek County area as dangerous temperatures and humidity are expected to persist through midweek. According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, heat index values could reach up to 110 degrees across northeast Iowa through at least Wednesday evening. Officials say the combination of high heat and humidity will create dangerous conditions, with little overnight relief as lows remain in the mid to upper 70s. The Decorah Public Library, in partnership with Winneshiek County Emergency Management, is serving as a cooling center this week to provide residents relief from the heat. The cooling area will be available Monday through Thursday during library hours, offering an air-conditioned space for anyone needing a break from the heat. The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, and avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Heat-related illnesses are more likely during extended periods of extreme heat. Forecasters also say strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday afternoon, mainly between noon and 7 p.m., with damaging winds, small hail and heavy rainfall the primary threats. Officials encourage residents to check on vulnerable neighbors, never leave children or pets in vehicles, and use cooling centers if needed as the extreme heat continues through midweek.
