Joining the practice full-time at the end of July, Dr. Kilian provides psychiatric care to patients aged 14+, and internal medicine care to adults with complex medical needs. She will also provide care and treatment for patients with addiction and substance use disorders. Psychiatry is a specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional and behavior disorders. Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors who are board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. They evaluate and treat patients using a variety of methods, including medication, psychotherapy and specialties therapies. At WinnMed, Kilian will treat a range of psychiatric conditions, including: Mood disorders Anxiety disorders PTSD and trauma-related disorders Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders Substance use disorders and addiction treatment Chronic pain management and co-occurring pain and addiction conditions Sleep disorders, including insomnia and related conditions Eating disorders Perinatal, peripartum and postpartum mental health conditions Cognitive disorders, including mild cognitive impairment and dementia Co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions She will also provide consultative care for adult patients with complex medical needs, working in partnership with their primary care providers. Originally from eastern Iowa, Kilian earned her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Minneapolis. She completed residency training in internal medicine and psychiatry at the University of Iowa before completing a fellowship in addiction medicine. Kilian is board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She anticipates board certification in addiction medicine this fall. "I strive to provide compassionate, patient-centered care that recognizes the strong connection between physical and mental health," Kilian said. "My training in internal medicine, psychiatry and addiction medicine allows me to care for patients with complex conditions that span these areas." Kilian said she works collaboratively with patients to understand their goals, provide education and develop individualized treatment plans that consider each person's medical, emotional and social needs. As a new specialty at WinnMed, psychiatry expands access to mental health care for patients throughout the region. In addition to psychiatric services, WinnMed offers behavioral health programs, including psychotherapy, integrated behavioral health services and group therapy. "Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two young boys," Kilian said. "We love being outdoors, especially hiking and biking, and exploring new places together. I also enjoy sewing and weightlifting."
