NICC Launches "WISE" Program: A New Hub for Learning and Connection for Adults 55+

CALMAR — Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is offering adults "55 and better" a new way to connect, learn and engage with the launch of WISE (Wisdom, Inspiration, Social, Experiences), a program designed to provide lifelong learning opportunities and meaningful social connections. Based at NICC's Calmar campus, WISE offers a welcoming space for individuals to embrace their "next chapter" through educational experiences, community activities and opportunities to build relationships. The program blends educational programming with a social, community-driven atmosphere. Organizers say WISE aims to strengthen community resilience by encouraging older adults to remain active citizens, engaged neighbors and lifelong learners. Designed as a "camp for grown-ups," WISE offers a variety of activities organized around participant interests. Offerings include history discussions, hands-on crafting workshops and specialized tracks such as Health and Wellbeing, which includes courses like Home Health Basics and Wellness for Life. The program will begin in September with a three-week series, Shuffle, Snack and Skadoo! (Class No. 107131). The series will meet Sept. 11, 18 and 25 and will focus on the card game 13 Skadoo. Open to all skill levels, the class is designed to provide a social opportunity while encouraging memory, focus and strategic thinking. Snacks will be provided during each session. Additional upcoming WISE events include a day trip to McGregor and local wineries, as well as a home maintenance and care series. Participants can choose individual classes and activities without long-term commitments. "We know that learning doesn't stop at retirement, and this program creates opportunities for adults 55 and older to explore new interests, build friendships and stay actively engaged in meaningful ways," said Amy Lasack, vice president of NICC Business and Community Solutions. "As WISE grows, we also want to hear directly from participants about the types of classes and experiences they would like to see so we can continue building offerings that reflect their interests and passions." NICC officials said WISE is designed for individuals looking to develop new hobbies, build friendships or remain active and connected within the community.
