Major Fire at Agri Star Plant in Postville; Smoke Advisory Issued, Hundreds of Jobs Potentially Impacted

POSTVILLE, Iowa — Multiple fire departments from across northeast Iowa responded early Tuesday morning to a major fire at the Agri Star Meat and Poultry plant in Postville, sending a large plume of smoke across the region. Emergency crews remained on scene Tuesday morning working to contain the fire. In a statement shared on social media, Agri Star said emergency responders had been at the facility since early Tuesday and that the safety of employees, emergency responders and the surrounding community remained the company's highest priority. No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the fire The fire began around 4 a.m. Tuesday and was accidental, according to officials. The fire originated in the facility's laundry room. The incident could have significant economic consequences for the community. Agri Star is one of the largest employers in the region, and the damage to the facility could leave hundreds of workers without income for an undetermined period. Agri Star said in a social media update Wednesday that it is working to assess the situation and determine next steps. The company thanked firefighters, law enforcement, EMS personnel, emergency management officials, utility crews and other first responders for their efforts. The company also expressed gratitude to employees, the Postville community, local businesses, neighboring organizations and other partners who have offered support, prayers and assistance. "To the Postville community and the many individuals, businesses, neighboring organizations and partners who have reached out with prayers, encouragement, offers of assistance and acts of kindness — thank you," the company said. Agri Star said its focus remains on the safety and well-being of employees, emergency responders and the community as it works with local, state and federal officials to assess the situation and plan for the future. Local rapid response networks formed to assist immigrant families during emergencies announced Tuesday morning that they are preparing to help affected workers and families. The IowaWORKS Mobile Workforce Center is assisting workers affected by the fire. The mobile unit will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, July 31, at the Big Four Fairgrounds, 327 N. A fire was reported at the plant in May, and an explosion occurred there in 2021. Officials have not announced when the facility may resume operations.
