Decorah High School Ranked No. 2 in Iowa

DECORAH — U.S. News & World Report has ranked Decorah High School the second-best high school in Iowa in its 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings. Decorah High School Principal Brad Hurst said the recognition reflects something much larger than a single ranking or school year. "Being recognized again among the best high schools in Iowa speaks to the consistency of our school community over many years. What I am most proud of is that this is not the result of a single class, program or group of people. It reflects students who are willing to challenge themselves, teachers who maintain high expectations while supporting students along the way, and staff throughout our school who work every day to create an environment where our students can be successful." Decorah High School also ranked No. 789 nationally in the 2026-27 rankings. U.S. News & World Report evaluates public high schools using multiple measures of student achievement and college readiness, including college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance and graduation rates. Hurst emphasized that while the national and statewide recognition is meaningful, the school remains focused on the work behind the ranking. "We certainly appreciate the recognition, and I think everyone associated with Decorah High School should take pride in it. Our focus remains on providing students with strong instruction, meaningful opportunities, appropriate support and the preparation they need for whatever comes next. It is rewarding when an outside measure recognizes the quality and consistency of that work, but we also know there is always more we can do for our students." Hurst also noted that the high school's success reflects the work of educators and staff throughout the Decorah Community School District. "The students who walk through our doors in ninth grade bring years of learning, relationships and high expectations with them. Our colleagues throughout the district play an important role in building that foundation long before students arrive at Decorah High School. This recognition reflects their work as well and a districtwide commitment to providing an outstanding education for our students."
