Know what's happening in your hometown. Help us keep you informed. Winneshiek County Public Health continues to offer free MMR vaccines to individuals requesting a dose as state and local health officials respond to a measles outbreak affecting multiple Iowa counties. There are currently no reported measles cases in Winneshiek County. Measles is highly contagious, but vaccination provides strong protection against the disease. An infected person can spread measles to others before knowing they are sick, and the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. Among unvaccinated people exposed to measles, about 90% will become infected. Measles can cause serious health problems, including lung infections, pneumonia, brain damage and pregnancy complications. Anyone who may have been exposed to measles or develops symptoms—including fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes or a rash—should call their health care provider before arriving for care. The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. Two doses of the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, are 97% effective at preventing measles, while one dose is 93% effective. Children routinely receive measles vaccinations at 12 months and 4 years of age. Those who have not received two doses may be at risk for measles. Adults born before 1957 are generally considered to have been exposed to measles and are presumed to have immunity. Individuals are considered up to date if they have received two doses of MMR or MMRV vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella. Winneshiek County Public Health is an approved Vaccines for Adults provider and, during the current measles outbreak, is able to offer MMR vaccines at no cost to those who need them. A $19 administration fee is charged to help cover the cost of supplies and documentation. To schedule an appointment, call Winneshiek County Public Health at 563-382-4662.
