Decorah Public Library to Host Lunch and Learn Program Featuring Therapy Dogs Oct. 21

Good local journalism takes time. Your support helps make it possible. DECORAH— Decorah Public Library and Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) invite community members ages 60 and older to participate in a monthly Lunch and Learn program. The next session will take place Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library's lower-level meeting room. The program is designed to help older adults stay informed, active and connected while building relationships within the community. Each month features a guest speaker, a nutritious lunch and information about nutrition education. Freewill donations to help cover the cost of the meal are appreciated. The October program will feature a presentation on therapy dogs by Julie Spilde, who will be joined by therapy dog Ace and several other therapy dog handlers and their dogs. Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and companionship in a variety of settings. They can offer older adults emotional support, companionship and potential physical health benefits, whether at home or in assisted living facilities. Spilde and the other handlers will discuss the benefits of therapy dogs and provide an opportunity for attendees to interact with the animals. The monthly program is hosted by Hallie Hite, a nutrition aging specialist with NEI3A. In her role, Hite works with community partners to address the needs of older adults, provides nutrition services and offers evidence-based health promotion classes. Hite will also lead a nutrition education presentation and, if time allows, light, accessible exercises. To assist with meal planning, participants are asked to register by the end of the day Sunday, Oct. 18. Registration is available online at decorahlibrary.org, in person at the library or by calling 563-382-3717. For more information, contact Zach Row-Heyveld at zrow-heyveld@decorahlibrary.org.
