Women basketball players, ages 50-83, are coming to Decorah this weekend for the 2023 National Granny Basketball Tournament. The six-on-six competition, based on 1920s-style rules, will take place at the Luther College Regents Center, July 15-16. Nineteen teams from seven states will be competing for the ultimate in bragging rights. The Cedar Rapids Sizzlers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are the defending national champions. This year's tournament is hosted by the LC Decorah Troll Trotters team in partnership with Luther College. The tournament will feature a new competition this year. The Off Our Rockers division will be for teams that play on a more recreational level. Granny Basketball is a fun-filled activity that encourages women age 50 and over to stay fit in a non-traditional, social environment. The league provides wholesome, nostalgic, and sometimes humorous entertainment, as well as an outlet for charitable fundraising. The competition will begin at 8:00 am on Saturday and at 8:00 am on Sunday. Saturday will feature pool play through 3:30 p.m. to determine placements on Sunday. The national championship game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The public is invited. Granny shot and other shooting contests will be offered to the public on one of the open courts with proceeds benefiting the tournament's selected charity, Raptor Resource Center. Admission to the tournament is $5 each day, which 100 percent of gate proceeds and 100% of all donations providing direct benefit to the charity. The Granny Basketball League is a non-profit Iowa-based organization founded in 2005. Currently, 42 Granny Basketball teams are active in 10 states: Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, and most recently, California and Arizona. Granny Basketball was created to provide women of a certain age a gentler form of the game, reminiscent of how the game was played by young women a century ago.
